This Cacao Hazelnut Butter Is Better Than Nutella

Better than the real thing rarely happens, but it happened here.

What:  Blue Stripes 100% Cacao Hazelnut Butter

How Much?: $14.95 for a 12.3 oz jar

It's rare that the healthier version of something is also more delicious, but Blue Stripes 100% Cacao Hazelnut Butter is infinitely superior to ubiquitous Nutella in every way. It's perfectly smooth and creamy, chock full of healthy fats and not even one gram of sugar. It sounds too good to be true, I know, but there are only three ingredients: organic hazelnut butter, organic 100% cacao and organic allulose, a low-calorie rare sugar that's naturally found in dried fruits like figs and raisins.

I've been stirring it into my overnight oats, throwing a heaping spoonful into cold brew morning smoothies and spreading it on crunchy sourdough toast with Chia Smash strawberry jam. And if I'm being honest, I've even eaten spoonfuls straight from the jar like a heathen.

Unlike Nutella, Blue Stripes is perfect for keto and vegan diets. It's hard to believe something so simple and pure could taste this decadent. There's also a surprising amount of phosphorus, 45% of your daily value in just one tablespoon. Phosphorus was never on my radar as a nutrient, but a quick WebMD search revealed that it's important to help the body make protein to repair cells and tissues, especially bones and teeth.

The quality of ingredients is more akin to gianduja, Nutella's Piedmontese predecessor, a chocolate-y hazelnut paste invented during Napoleon's reign to extend the little cacao they had access to. I'm grateful that there's no shortage of chocolate in my life today. And especially grateful to the geniuses who first thought to blend hazelnuts and cacao to create something greater than the sum of its parts.
